The district of the Andalucian origin.
It is one of the core ancient parts of Muslim Granada. Its narrow streets from the top of the city up to the course of the river Darro and Calle Elvira, both join at the Plaza Nueva. The traditional type of housing in this area is ‘el Carmen’, made up of dwellings surrounded by a tall wall that separates it from the street and that includes a small vegetable patch or garden. Channelling and distribution of drinking water through tanks was something of the norm for the district, in total 28 have been recorded found, the majority of which are still being used. The Albaicin was announced World Heritage by Unesco.
